Effective Goal Setting - The Process! Now that you have a solid understanding of the importance of and ingredients required for effective goal setting, I'd like to provide a procedure for you to follow. Consider this a process of planning your life. Normally in life you can only go so far, but through this process you're going to develop a solid mental image of the reality that you want. A reality that's greater than any you've experienced in the past. Then you're going to take that internal mental image and externalize it through your actions. Make a list of all your wants, needs, dreams and desires. Create all of the ingredients you'll need to achieve them. The people, places, feelings, and resources necessary to achieve each item on your list. Please sit down and do it right now. Take pen to paper and start writing. The trick to this procedure is to keep the pen moving. Don't allow it to stop. Do this for as long as it takes. Don't place any limitations upon yourself other than those dictated by your intelligence (as we discussed previously). Remember the only limitations you have are in your own mind. Take all of your limiting beliefs and throw them away. They serve no purpose for us. Knowing your outcome is the first step in actually achieving it. So make your list now! Now categorize each goal on your list by short, medium and long-term (1 year, 5 years, 10 years). Make sure you have goals in each of these categories and that the shorter term goals support the longer term goals. Take your 5 most important short-term goals (to be achieved in less than a year) from your list and write them down on a separate piece of paper. Now write down exactly why you will achieve each of these 5 goals. Again let the pen flow freely. Come up with as many reasons as you possibly can for each goal. Be as specific as possible. Use the 5 W's: Who, What, Where, When, and Why. The more reasons you can come up with to do something, the better your chances of actually doing it. The reasons for doing something are much more important than the outcome itself. This will allow you to be totally committed to achieving each of your goals. Now that you have your most important short-term goals, make sure they are, 1) stated as a positive outcome, 2) specific, 3) measurable (you'll know when you've achieved it), 4) The outcome is not dependent upon anyone else, 5) The outcome does not harm others. Make a list of your abilities, talents and resources. Make sure that you have the tools necessary to achieve each of your key goals. Now focus on a time from the past when you achieved a key goal. Do this 4 or five times. Now write down what you've accomplished, how you attained each of these key goals, and how attaining these goals made you feel. Now visualize what kind of person you will need to be, and how achieving each of these goals will make you feel? Be as specific as possible. Write down the kind of beliefs, attitudes, attributes, education, abilities and special talents you will need to achieve these goals. Take your time on this and write a few paragraphs describing this person in detail. Review the technique, "Ask and You Shall Receive" from module 4 for assistance. Now write down what obstacles stand in your way. Why won't you succeed? What has prevented you from succeeding in the past? Once you know your limitations you will be able to overcome them. Review the meditation technique,A� "Who am I" from module 4, and dissect your personality. Find out what's been holding you back. Inevitably to achieve any of your dreams requires proper action. Do you act recklessly? Do you get bored quickly? Do you fail to follow through? Do you fail to plan? By recognizing your past limitations, you can begin to change them now. Note that many obstacles you will uncover are the direct result of various fears that you have developed from the past. In Module 4 & 5 we will explore the notion of fear and how to eliminate fear from your life. For now just make this list and keep it handy. You'll want to refer to it later in the program. For each of your 5 key goals create a step by step action plan. What is the first thing you'll need to do? What should occur next? Who should I speak to? What will happen after you take each action? What prevents you from having this now and what can you do to change it? Now visualize your ideal day after you've achieved each of your key goals. What will you be doing? Who will be with you? How will you feel? What will your perfect environment look like? Where will you be living? What will your home look like? Who will you share all of it with? Are you married, or single, do you have children, and what are their roles in your perfect day. Write it all down in detail. Be very specific about not only the material, concrete objects in your perfect day but the intangibles also. The sights, sounds, tastes and feelings. Go through your list of sub-modalities, and write them down. Review the PDF file from Module 2 on Nuero-Linguistic Programming (NLP) for details. Use the Shattered Glass technique to enhance your visualization of the ideal day. Put your ideal day visualization in the bottom right hand side of the mirror and the image of your current life in the main section of the mirror. Now say "Bammmmm" and increase the size and intensity of your ideal day image and have it shatter right through your current day and shatter it into a million shards of glass. Bammmmmmmmm! Do this repeatedly until you have the image of your ideal day firmly affixed in your 's it. Have fun with this process.
