Learn How to Start a Blog - Home Based Business Owners Need to Know
Ok, so you're no internet rookie, but we've all heard of the term, blog. While many of us are familiar with the word, there are plenty of us that have no idea what they are and why people do it. The term, blog, was simply derived from the blending of the phrase, "web log". When put into those terms it makes a lot more sense in understanding what a blog really is.
A blog is basically logging information on the web. It became popular with small and major businesses alike to communicate with the general public. Some companies use web logs to announce a major sale, and some use them to inform customers of changes to the company. It later became widely used by the average Joe for just about anything. You've seen them; poetry, memorabilia, photography, or politics. Blogs are now used for just about any passion, and more commonly referred to as a niche blog.
So why do most seem obsessed with blogging?
There are mainly three types of bloggers. You have the passive hobbyist type. Those just share with the world what they love. You have the professional blogger; usually the columnist that works for a major newspaper or ESPN, for instance. Then you have monetized blogger. These types literally make it their business to learn the in's and outs of obtaining an optimal rank on search engines. They further monetize their blogs by building lists of subscribers, providing affiliate information, or using pay-per-click services.
There are many bloggers that have gotten wise to the later type of blogging described above. Given the current state of our global economy, and the projected growth of internet users, blogging for a living would be a great option. Whether you want to accept it or not, effective blogging does generate income. The key is how much exactly are you willing to self-educate. There are so many things you can do to a blog that will ultimately drive traffic to it.
What makes a blog so special?
Aside from the income potential, the thing I like the most about blogs is their search engine friendliness. You see, unlike a typical website a blog offers fresh information. Search engines love constantly updated information. Just think about what do most people rely on the internet for. A search engine wouldn't be in business long if they constantly provided stale research for users. Of course this will only work if you update your blog often. Thanks to the power of RSS, or Real Simple Syndication, a blog will usually have the advantage over the typical website. I also love the fact that you can create a niche blog and earn money by doing something you already have a penchant for. Then, its not really like work!
No fair, I want a blog!
Its very simple to start blogging, it's not much tougher to monetize. There are many services out there, but I suggest that you first research the most popular ones. In other words, find out which ones have high page rankings. Check out the traffic they get, the more the better. A great source to use is to find traffic rankings. And make sure that they're reliable. Way back in 2002 I began using Live Journal. I took a hiatus and after my return I jumped on the Blogger bandwagon. Blogger belongs to Google, so you do the math. Take blogging seriously, because if you own a home-based business its very necessary. Don't worry though, I'll be doing a video soon on how to create one.
